Why You Lose Friends After a Spiritual Awakening

The biggest thing in your life has just happened. And you cannot share it with anybody, or the people you do tell think you are losing it.

Awakening can feel very lonely. There is a reason for that which almost nobody names, and it is worth understanding, because it changes what you do about it.

Friendship is often built on shared suffering

Part of what you connect over with people is your suffering. Most of us have friends who carry roughly the same level of it, expressed in roughly the same way. That is the shared ground you stand on together.

And when you wake up, you free yourself from a big part of that suffering. You stop trying to validate your own limitations. You stop talking badly about people. You stop gossiping. You stop blaming society, or the government, or whoever was convenient. You maybe stop eating junk food, doing drugs or drinking alcohol. Instead you start empowering yourself, understanding that you are strong because you are source, that you are this bigger self, that you are part of this reality and have never actually been alone.

All of that is good. It is also the thing that quietly removes the floor under some of your friendships. You have not become better than anyone. You have simply stopped standing where you used to stand, and some connections were built entirely on that spot.

It can still feel lonely, and that is normal

Even knowing all of this, you can feel alone after awakening, and a lot of people do. There is a meme I love: so you have spiritually awakened, you have lost your friends, and you do not know what to do with your job. Welcome.

That was definitely the case for me when it happened.

Not every old friendship has to end

Here is what I found. With some of my friends I could not really talk about spirituality. But I could tell them what had happened to me, and then connect with them over other things.

I still have quite a few friendships like that. We rarely talk about spirituality. We talk about philosophy, or about their lives and how things are actually going, or we simply have a lot of humor together. The connection is real. It just does not run through this particular door.

Not all your friends need to be spiritual friends. Some will genuinely no longer resonate, because you are no longer in the same kind of suffering or the same vibe. But others can stay, if you stop asking them to carry the part they cannot carry.

That includes how you share it. You can open up about what is happening to you without needing a specific response. They do not have to understand it. They do not have to find it the most important or coolest thing in your life. You can interact with them about ordinary things and still let this part exist in the room.

Your partner needs some of it

With your partner this matters more. Even if they do not understand it, it is important that they know this is happening to you, because it is such a big part of your life.

You do not have to share every detail of what is going on. But some of it they need. They will notice the ups and downs anyway. It helps them enormously to know that they have a partner who is more present than before, and also a partner who is moving through a lot of conditioning and letting go of a lot. Without that context, the changes look like something else entirely.

And you do need people who speak this language

It is also important to have people you can actually talk to about this. Having a teacher, and having others who are into spirituality, or at least honestly looking at themselves and their own patterns, is one of the things that most helped me get through this. Over the years I found those people, and I connected with them.

Look for the depth and authenticity you are craving. You will not find it in every old relationship, and asking for it there is often what makes the loneliness sharper. Find it where it exists, and let the older friendships be what they are.

How adults actually connect

The way adults make new connections is by doing things together and building a relationship out of that. So put yourself in new situations. Go to your local gym. Join a club. Go to a spiritual meeting. Do a retreat. Over time, people of similar quality will be drawn to you, but only if you keep putting yourself somewhere they can find you.

Spiritual awakening gets really lonely when you stop doing the things that create new connections.

If you want to be in a room with other people going through this, I host The Open Hour. It is a free live session with a meditation, a short talk, and time for your questions, and you get to see that you are not the only one. You can register here: https://fromdoingtobeing.org/open-hour
